Educating Tomorrow’s Environmental Leaders Today
SSBx’s environmental education programs seek to empower local youth with the knowledge and resources they need to address environmental justice issues in the South Bronx. Our programs engage middle and high school students in hands-on science and emphasize participation in real-world projects. We believe it’s important to educate and inspire middle and high school students to care about the environment and to understand the concept of environmental justice.
Upcoming Project: AirCasting
SSBx has developed the South Bronx AirCasting Project, a citizen science program that lets students from Bronx- and Manhattan-based high schools collect credible air quality data in their neighborhoods with hand-held air quality monitors. Students can then annotate and share this data with others through crowd sourcing, and learn how to create advocacy campaigns.
We have worked with South Bronx students on a variety of environmental projects in the past, including building tree guards in Hunts Point. We’ve also had a sustainable design program, which ran for six years, called FabLab.
