In memoriam: Annette Williams

Categories: NewsFeed

aw2It is with tremendous sadness that we share the news that our Deputy Director, Annette Williams, passed away this past weekend. Annette was the heart and soul of Sustainable South Bronx, and her work over the past 11 years has had an enduring impact on the lives of thousands of people and has helped make the South Bronx greener and healthier.

After serving as Vice President of Community Outreach and Programming at the New York Restoration Project, Annette joined SSBx in 2003. For 10 years, she ran our flagship program – the Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training (BEST) Academy, through which she helped underemployed and unemployed New Yorkers gain skills to launch careers in the green sector. Beginning in 2013, she focused on our social enterprise, through which she helped BEST Academy graduates gain experience and income working on environmental and energy efficiency projects. Annette’s compassion, positivity, and warmth were evident to all who knew her. To BEST Academy students and graduates, she was a friend and advisor; alumni frequently visited her in the office to update her on their lives and to seek her advice.

Those of us who were fortunate enough to have worked with Annette were consistently inspired by her spirit, wonderful personality, and dedication to the people and issues she cared about. Annette was an everyday hero to us and to the many people whose lives she helped make better. We will miss her very much. Her family is in our thoughts and prayers.

A wake will be held on Thursday, December 18th from 3:00 pm – 9:00 pm and the funeral services will be on Friday, December 19th at 10:00 am. The wake and funeral will take place at White Rock Baptist Church  (270 South 5th Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York). In lieu of flowers, the family will be receiving donations for a memorial fund. They can be sent to:
