SSBx’s Social Enterprise Helps NYC Go Green
Sustainable South Bronx contributes to the wider environmental sustainability of New York City through our social enterprise, SmartRoofs, LLC. All SmartRoofs projects are completed by BEST Academy graduates, who gain extremely valuable job experience while simultaneously earning income.
SmartRoofs is serving a variety of clients, including ABC Carpet & Home; in 2011, we installed 10,000 square feet of green roof atop the company’s South Bronx warehouse. Other SmartRoofs clients include Sims Metal Management, for whom we conduct a variety of services, and the campus of Alfred E. Smith High School in the Bronx, which also has a green roof that we installed. In May 2012, SmartRoofs work crews installed a green roof at Rocking the Boat, a nonprofit organization located near our office in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. In June and July 2012, a SmartRoofs crew replanted four acres of tidal wetlands at a property located on the South Bronx waterfront.
In April 2012, SSBx/SmartRoofs was one of two green workforce organizations chosen to implement the NYC CoolRoofs initiative, a citywide effort to provide white, reflective coatings atop buildings in order to promote energy efficiency. This was our first citywide contract and it provided an excellent opportunity for BEST Academy graduates seeking additional experience. Through this contract, BEST graduates cleaned over 450,000 square feet of roof space and coated over 265,000 square feet of roof space between July and October.
