We have been overwhelmed by the generous expressions of support and offers to volunteer, but doing our work often gets in the way of taking you up on your offers. This is a BIG job and we really do need your help!
We are looking for volunteers/interns on specific projects. Please consider and reply to ssbinfo@gmail.com with the project title in your subject line, along with a one-page resume/bio:
¥ MYSPACE PAGE : Work with SSBx's Director of Communications to design and maintain our page on myspace.
¥ FUND RAISING RESEARCH: SSBx needs lists of foundations - corporate, family and otherwise. Help us reach our fundraising goals by finding appropriate matches with our work.
¥ 2nd Annual HUNTS POINT HUSTLE 5K WALK / RUN
8 am to 12 pm SUNDAY, June 21, 2008
Give out water, help with registration, and usher people into the post-race celebration. Come and see the route of the coming South Bronx Greenway, and our new waterfront parks! We also need help distributing flyers to local businesses and schools prior to the race.
¥ LEGAL AND PLANNING ASSISTANCE: We need lawyers, and urban planners to help us defeat NYC's shortsighted decision to build a 2,000 bed jail on the Oak Point site in the S. Bronx. We already have legal counsel but as the fight gets more intense, the more help the better!
¥ PHOTOGRAPHY: We could always use more Photos of SSBx in action.
¥ COMMUNITY OUTREACH: We need BILINGUAL Spanish/English volunteers who are patient, outgoing, like to talk, and eager to work with residents in on-the-ground activities.
¥ RESEARCH:
- Alternative Fuels/Trucking Incentive Programs. There are a number of programs throughout the US assisting diesel truckers to become more fuel efficient, and less polluting. New York needs to catch up. Help develop creative ways to get the private sector to become more sustainable by researching these initiatives.
- Sustainability Legislation Research ways that energy and stormwater are addressed in other cities.
- Community Surveying: Help conduct approximately 500 surveys in the South Bronx Community to gauge community opinion and vision for future development.
- Green Collar Employers: Expand our database of companies that can hire graduates of our Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training program.
- COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS: How much do environmental burdens cost us? We can point you in the right direction for clues, but it takes time and persistence on the part of the researcher. Interested?
